Over a hundred Christmas tree growers travelled from all over the country to Wetherby last week for the British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) conference held at Stockeld Park.
The BCTGA were delighted when Peter Grant, owner of Stockeld agreed to host the annual gathering, which gave members the opportunity to tour over 200 acres of Christmas tree plantations.
Stockeld Park has been growing Christmas trees for over 40 years and has built up a reputation for quality and freshness and is renowned as Yorkshire's finest Christmas tree grower.
Farm Manager, Geoff Marston gave the army of growers a personal tour of his fields and shared with them 40 years of tree growing experience, divulging his tried and tested growing techniques and treatment schedules.
Like all farmers, Christmas tree growers are challenged by government bans on preciously effective herbicides and pesticides and as a result are constantly having to change their growing methods. Growers were given advice on current effective treatments and also bud rubbing and leader stiffening techniques.
Following a tour of the stunning Christmas tree plantations, set amidst the back drop of rolling North Yorkshire countryside, the growers were then given further inspiration by Peter Grant, who gave them a tour of the Christmas Adventure site and a talk revealing the trials and tribulations of setting up the hugely popular winter visitor attraction 'The Christmas Adventure', which was a spin off from selling fresh Christmas trees to retail customers.
Roger Hay, Chairman of the BCTGA concluded that the conference at Stockeld was one of the most informative they have ever had and was particularly interesting for members not only for growing advice, but also for business diversification inspiration.
